Best Beaches in Barbados (And How to Reach Them)

Barbados packs a remarkable range of coastline into a small island — calm bath-warm water on one side, dramatic surf on the other. Here's a quick guide to the beaches worth building your day around.

West Coast — calm water, classic postcard Barbados

Known locally as the Platinum Coast, the west is sheltered from the open Atlantic, so the water stays calm and warm almost year-round. Mullins Beach is a favorite for its beach bar and easy swimming; Paynes Bay is wide, popular and well set up with vendors and water sports. Both are easy to reach by bus or taxi from Bridgetown or most south/west coast hotels.

Carlisle Bay — snorkeling with turtles and shipwrecks

Just south of Bridgetown, Carlisle Bay is a protected marine park with several shipwrecks close to shore and a resident population of sea turtles. It's one of the best spots on the island for snorkeling straight off the beach, and catamaran tours often stop here too.

South Coast — lively and cliff-backed

Crane Beach, backed by dramatic cliffs and famous for its soft, pink-tinged sand, is consistently ranked among the Caribbean's best. Nearby Bottom Bay is quieter and more secluded, reached down a short path — bring water, as there are few facilities.

East Coast — beautiful, but look, don't swim

Bathsheba, with its huge boulders and pounding Atlantic surf, is the island's most photographed stretch of coast and a genuine surf spot (the famous Soup Bowl break). The currents here are strong and unpredictable, though — it's a beach for photos, picnics and watching surfers, not casual swimming.
